SAP Basis Basics Part 45
New Client Copy Tool
With SAP_BASIS 7.54 (SAP S/4HANA 1909), SAP delivers new client management tools based on new common architecture. They are a complete redesign of the previous client copy (transactions SCCL, SCC9, SCC5, …). The new tools replace the old client copy and also offer new functions. They are optimized for increased performance, process automation and stability. The log of the client copy has also been completely revised and is now much more meaningful and easier to read, so that troubleshooting is much easier.
There are also new tools to compare clients and to determine the size of clients. With SAP_BASIS 7.55, the client export and client import have been expanded to include the option of exporting / importing so-called “snapshots”.
The Client Copy Tool contains the following improvements:
- Improved performance: Up to 10 times faster than before using native HANA capabilities. The Remote Client Copy tool is up to 5 times faster than before.
- Improved security and reduced manual effort: User SAP* is no longer needed to perform client copies so that system does not need to be restarted. Task lists are available for automation.
- Improved stability: The Client Copy application exits now run in isolated environments. Failed exits and tables are stored in the log.
- Improved log: The Client Copy log has been transformed from a file-based to a table-based UI with additional information and better persistence. The tool offers multiple tabs for different sections of the log, such as Header Data, Deleted & Copied Tables, Application Exit Messages and Runtime Measurements.
Please note the following changes when running the Client Copy tool:
- Client copies must no longer be executed from the target client. Instead, we recommend to run the Client Copy tool from a third client which is not affected by the tool. For example, when copying from client 100 to 200, you could run the tool in client 000.
- The new authorization objects S_CLNT_CPY and S_CLNT_EXI are available.
- The client copy always locks the target client. By default, the source client is also locked. You may choose to not lock the source client at the risk of concurrent write access to the source client resulting in inconsistent copies. A client lock now not only prevents new logins using SAP GUI, but also for HTTP access.
